Hungry like the Wolf.

jennifer lawrenceJennifer Lawrence is the hot new name in Hollywood thanks to the rising buzz of The Hunger Games and I personally think she is definitely going to go on to great things. When I read her interview for Glamour magazine she seems so refreshingly normal - untainted by her new found fame, having already been Oscar-nominated for Winter’s Bone, and so not Hollywood in a good way.

She portrays Katniss Everdeen in the up and coming Hunger Games - based on the phenomenal books. Its a refreshing new heroine for the cinema going generation, “she’s a hunter,” Lawrence says of Katniss, “she’s the first hero we have who doesn’t think at any point she isn’t going to die. She’s completely vulnerable.”

The film, released next Friday here in the UK, looks set to be a massive Box Office smash, if not THE smash of the year. Already taking in $130 million tickets in its first weekend reportedly.

The film is set in a dystopian, after-apocalyptic US where the Capitol reigns supreme over a dozen zoned off districts. Due to a revolt in one District, those in power in the Capitol devise the Hunger Games as punishment. The Games require one girl and one guy from each district, chosen at random, to compete for their lives and only one sole survivor can win.

Like a future Gladitorial fight, the ‘players’ are manipulated into killing each other and battling, but the moment of brutality are juxtaposed with touching, compassionate moments. “I’m no different”, muses Lawrence, We watch people’s tragedy for entertainment. We watch people’s lives fall apart and we sit on our sofa’s and eat popcorn. Once you lose touch with your empathy, there’s no telling what could happen.”

Keep your eye on this girl not only is she hot property she definitely rocks that outfit better then Kim Kardashian.

The Hunger Games is released in cinemas in the UK 23rd March.

Interview quotes I do not own; from a newspaper interview she gave.

Purely going to see this film just because Luke Evans is in it.
Not very cultured of me I know but he is utterly gorgeous.
It doesn’t look that bad only flaw is in the adverts it states, “John Cusack is Edgar Allan Poe” clearly advertising for idiots.

It does surprise me a little that both The Artist and Hugo took home 5 Oscars each, seeing as I personally feel that the annoyance that is 3D is on its way out of cinema. However, from what I have heard of Hugo it is an incredible feat of film making and I will lower my fists and let 3D own this small triumph. The fists are up though for the lack of recognition for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Garry Oldman for his performance in that film. Tinker Tailor should have received the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay and although I love Gary Oldman and his performance, Jean Dujardin truly deserved it for his incredible performance in The Artist and I can’t help but think it is highly impressive he won over Brad Pitt and George Clooney, too Hollywood giants - look out boys there’s a new suave gentleman on the scene! I also feel that recognition should have been given to the music for WarhorseBerenice Bejo was overlooked in the Best Actress category and Senna for Best Documentary.

Only thing I have to say about Meryl Streep’s win is that it is incredibly unfair she has gotten to kiss Colin Firth twice (once at Bafta and again at the Oscars) and cosy up with the sexy Jean Dujardin.

I share his sentiments…

Now I am not keen on Reese Witherspoon, her chin is quite a distraction, but this film does look rather funny. I think Tom Hardy is a great actor and set to have a good year with this and Batman 3 coming out and Tom Pine has had great success in Star Trek and Just my Luck.

This look hilarious! I still hate Jennifer Lopez trying to be in movies but its the rest of the characters that make me want to see it and the promo of “the dudes”.

Summer Wars [English Dub]

- Directed by Mamoru Hosoda.

summer warsI have just gotten in from my best friends house where we watched two Japanese animated films - I cannot for the life of me remember whether they were Manga or Anime my apologies - they were called Paprika and Summer Wars. I have always been an avid fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli films and it is a common interest that me and my best friend share. There is something about the hand drawn skill of a Japanese film and the weird and wonderful narratives they oftenuse. I could happily say that Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda) is on of the best films I have seen in a while due to its humour, artistic flare and modern War Games type storyline resulting in an interesting film about the use of virtual and social networks in our daily lives.
Paprika (Satoshi Kon) was also very interesting, definitely an enjoyable watch with a narrative with many twists and turns which isn’t 100% easy to follow as it does feel at times a little repetitive and there’s quite a focus on female nudity but nonetheless extremely captivating.

The Oscars!

So excited that The Artist is up for 10 Oscars this year! I hope it sweeps the lot, it truly deserves it for being a beautiful and poignant piece of cinema.
